Do I need a lawyer to file for bankruptcy?

This is a personal decision for each debtor. A majority of personal Chapter 7 bankruptcies are “no asset” cases; this means that there are no assets available to be liquidated. If you’re willing and able to understand some fairly complicated forms and rules you might successfully navigate your way through a Chapter 7 case alone. Lots of do-it-yourself kits and guidance are available on the Internet, though they aren’t always entirely accurate or up to date.
Because a Chapter 13 case is a longer and more complex process, most debtors find that the assistance of an experienced bankruptcy lawyer is well worth the cost.
